Peer-Leader Training

two students sitting at table, talking and looking at computer screenAll ASLA peer leaders take part in a comprehensive initial orientation, and engage in ongoing professional development and regular interactive staff meetings throughout their peer-leader experience.

Peer leaders in UPAL and Peer Academic Coaching engage in training throughout the year by participating in staff meetings, discussions, and professional-development sessions designed to support their growth as mentors.

Peer leaders in the Peer-Guided Study Groups, Mentored Study Program, and Drop-In Tutoring programs take the SESP 291 course as a core part of their training. This two-quarter, 0.5-credit-per-quarter course is designed to help peer leaders

  • gain practical group facilitation skills, and leverage the talents, perspectives, and experience they already have in order to become an excellent facilitator;
  • gain knowledge of the dynamics of small groups, and bring this knowledge into their leadership;
  • become familiar with learning research and theory, and bring this knowledge into their leadership;
  • gain knowledge and confidence around creating welcoming learning environments for their students; and
  • reflect on their academic leadership practice and develop self-evaluation skills.

Students who exceed 5.5 credits because of enrollment in SESP 291 do not incur an additional tuition charge.
